Makhana: Makhana is a type of seed derived from Euryale ferox  plant. They are also sometimes referred to as Fox Nuts or Lotus Seeds. Makhana is widely cultivated throughout Asia and often used in Medicine and Cuisine. They are also sometimes roasted and enjoyed as a Savory Snack or added to curies, side dishes or desserts. The health benefits and nutritional value of Makhanas make them a popular choice for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Nearly 90% of world production of Makhana comes from Bihar, Specifically the 10 District of Bihar i.e. Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Katihar, Purnea, Kishanganj, Araria, Saharsha, Supaul & Madhepura. Makhana of this region has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag by the Union Government.

In Purnea District, there is a huge opportunities for Makhana Processing Industries.  Nearly about 20% of Makhana of Bihar is cultivated in Purnea. Approximately in 5600 hectare of land Makhana is cultivated in Purnea and trade is nearly about 3500 MT per annum. Thousands of persons are involved directly and indirectly in Makhana Cultivation, processing & Trading. Various Government Scheme like PMEGP,PMFME,MMUY, Makhana Vikash Yojna, SIPB etc are implemented by Central/State govt. for the development of Makhana Cultivation/Processing in the region.
